Lightning Arrester

The main purpose of a Lightning Protection System (LPS) is to protect a building or facility from damage that may occur due to lightning strikes. The LPS works by intercepting lightning and providing a safe passage for extremely high current to dissipate into the ground.

A lightning protection system includes a network of Air Terminals, Bonding Conductors, and an Earthing System. The earthing system offers a low-resistance path to ground, allowing heavy lightning current to pass safely during a strike. This process helps reduce the heating effect caused by current flowing through flammable structural materials, preventing fire or damage.

The majority of lightning protection systems in use today follow the traditional Franklin design. The fundamental principle of Franklin-type systems is to provide a low-impedance path for lightning to travel through — ensuring it reaches the ground without harming the structure.

This is achieved by surrounding the building with a Faraday cage-like setup, using lightning conductors and rods installed on rooftops and high points. These components intercept lightning before it can strike the building directly, allowing the energy to be safely discharged into the ground.
